The First Phase : Chapter 9

The next evening, my parents were out. I didn't ask for the reason and Veann didn't bother telling me so I assume it was a stroll.

Still feeling sleepy, I got irritated when Veann told me the menu for my meal. Urgh, that damn tasteless menu again. Veann dressed me up in a white everyday robe. Then, he braided my hair beautifully that it complements the simple dull robe. The golden hair pin highlights my lime coloured hair. Veann then brought out the long mirror so that I could see my own outfit for the day. That so-called simple dressing actually turns out elegant, befitting a royal.

"How do you like it, young miss?" asked Veann.
"Boring, but that'll do" I replied.

I stared out of the window from the armchair. It's still mid-evening so the sunlight still lingers. Some part of me wanted to bath in the sun, since novels describe them to be a bliss. Another stronger part of my pride dismiss the thoughts as those activities are judge from the lowly brains of the no-good human. Then again, the fact that our race couldn't experience the sun must have been Kuran's fault. It must have been him that put us the time boundary, giving many chances for the human. I just couldn't tolerate with his cowardice. Why should we, the superior race, give ways to the humans? Our one man strength is is stronger than their hundred trained warriors.  Yet we have to live in hiding while those lowly beings can enjoy both day and night.

"Veann," I called.
"Yes, young miss," he responded.
"It'll be full moon tonight. I refuse to stay indoors," I said.
"Should we go to the garden for our lesson?" he asked.
"No, I'm not taking any today. Let's take a stroll in the city," I said.

Veann looked perplexed. By Kuran rules, I can't wander into the city, due to my age. However, I'm far more superior than any purebloods of my age. He admitted to that before. So, I should be excluded from the rule, right? Yet my servant stood there, still distressed thinking of an answer.

"That is not a request. It's a demand. We're going out to the city tonight," I stated.
"Young miss, there is nothing to see in the city," he reasoned.
"That's up to me to decide," I said.
"If a stroll is what young miss desire, why don't we take one to the mountain?" he asked.
"Ah, to the puny village, you mean?" I asked.

Surprisingly, Veann was offended by my remarked. For calling the village puny? Why does he regard that village so highly?

"Fine, let's just do that. I have no idea why you're trying to avoid me from going into the city but it's not like I wanted to go so much. I've been conquered by boredom, so if we're going to the village, those people better entertain me," I said.
"Thank you for your kindness, young miss. I shall make preparations right away," he said.

Then he held out his hand, inviting to escort me to the dining hall. I took his hand and we left the dim, richly furnished room.

Just as we stepped out of the room, I heard servants gossiping intensely. Their worried scent fills the air. Again, I was irritated. I guess my face gave away my emotions as Tazia was giggling while leaning against the corridor wall.

"Dear sister, just let them worry for now. It seems like a noble family have been wiped out," she said.
"Which house do they serve?" I asked.
"Angita. Veann didn't tell you? Quite a horrible thing actually. The Angitas killed them mercilessly. Some of them fled but that's the end of those nobles, I tell you. Even if they return, they'll just gonna be executed for killing a royal," she said.
"Killing a royal?"
"Yup, they claimed that the Angitas was abusing their rights or something, some disputes.. and the heir of Angita was killed with a hunter's weapon".
"What idiotic measures. Using hunter's weapon is a crime! Those nobles are stupid! In the first place, they shouldn't complain about the royals."

Tazia gave a long "hmmm" before she turned to Veann, smirking.

"But Veann doesn't think so, right?" she asked.
"I'm in no place to state my opinion, Miss Tazia," said Veann.
"Hmm? Could you actually have a different opinion on this matter, Veann?" I asked.

Before Veann could answer, Ienua interrupted our conversation. She was sulking, while dejectedly call us for a meal. Tazia dropped the tension and skipped to the dining hall. I followed with Veann behind me.

The rest of Kuroli were waiting at the dining hall. However, there were three additional figures sitting with my family. I recognised two of them; the odd boy from the other day and his father. The other boy was probably Firan's age. He was tall, lean, with deep indigo eyes and pale skin -similar features as the odd boy- except that his silky brunette hair runs long till the waist and tied handsomely like a respectable general of an ancient Chinese lords while the odd boy had short, though smartly combed, pale brunette hair.

After exchanging introductions in which I found out the other guy, Puram Daem is the odd boy's brother and also the head of the Daem family, we resume the meal quietly as both fathers talked. I knew instinctively what my siblings thoughts were, as I have the same thoughts. We are awed by the Puram Daem. He held the position of head of Daem family while his father and uncles are alive. That would only means that he was gifted with greater strength and charm than his father.

Still, it was odd that Father was ignoring him and talked to Mr Daem instead. Since Puram Daem didn't seem offended, we ignored it all the same. Puram Daem and the odd boy was a quiet bunch. Even when Siena, Firan and Tazia tried to start a conversation, they replied with a full stop. In the end, only Mr Daem's and my parents voice filled the hall.
