The First Phase : Chapter 7

That one cold snowy day, another pureblood came over for a visit. As usual the servants took them to Father's. I usually wouldn't want to know what those puny think-they-know-it-all adults were discussing. However, this time, our visitors were of unfamiliar scent. And there's a boy around my age with them.

My brother and sisters were in their academy, diligently studying who knows what. I used to want to go to that very same academy but Father insisted that I use a home tutor instead. That was how Veann got into the household. He was recommended by Kuran so I hated the sight of him at first. Gradually, since he's also my personal butler, I find him unlike Kuran.

So, when we saw the boy at the garden that day, we were both stunned. Why would a boy come over at a time like this? Shouldn't he be in the academy? I thought Kuran strictly made all purebloods attend the academy. My case was odd, but I didn't question it. It was too much of a bother to think of such small matters as to why I wasn't sent to the academy. So it made me wonder if this boy was "special" too.

"Veann, go find out what he wants," I ordered.
My servant gave a nod and went to the boy. After a while, he came back to me.
"Master Daem asked for an audience with young miss," he said.
"Bring him here," was what I said.

When the boy approached, I could sense a different air around him. It was almost like Kuran but it missed the jerky part of him.Though I planned to observe him and leave, I decided best not to do so. He's strong. I sense the superiority in his air, but I also don't plan to be inferior to that being.

"So, what is it that you want?" I asked.
"Nothing," the boy replied without looking at me,"I was told that the daughter of this family would keep me company".
"Huh? And who told you that? Is it my father?" I asked.
"It was my father who said so. And Mr. Kuroli told me where I would find you," he said.
"I take it that my father didn't actually tell me to keep you company. So run along, do as you wish. I have no such plan to entertain you," I answered.
"No," he said,"but I'm not going anywhere. I seemed to be asked to stay with you".

I gave him a simple "hmph" and resume reading one of the book Veann gave me.

"That a human book. Why do you read it?" the boy asked.
"Because I do. Do you mind? I don't like to be disturbed!" I said.
"Then, if you don't mind, can I read what you have? I'm left with no choice but to continue disturbing you when I have nothing to do," he said.
"Veann, fetch him something," I ordered.
"Of course," replied Veann. Then he turned to the boy and asked him his preferences.
"I don't know. Give me a human book. I never read one before," he said.

Both Veann and me stared at him. Why would he want to read them anyway? The boy, noticing our silent stares, slump himself onto a couch opposite mine and sigh.

"Don't act dumb now. I could smell those books hidden somewhere. If you're not letting me read them, I'll just have to tell Mr. Kuroli that his daughter's tutor is teaching her to read that filthy made book," he said.
"What??"
"It's true. You're not suppose to read that, aren't you? Those are taboos. Especially their novels and culture books. You should only read them with permissions. And I just know you don't have them. So instead of being so secretive with me, why not just let me read some of your collections? This way, we'll keep this little secret to ourselves. Once I read them, I'm partly guilty anyway, so I won't be reporting to anyone my own crime."

After exchanging a few glares and menace, I decided to let him in. Shouldn't be a big deal, right? He's right afterall. Once he's part of the circle, he wouldn't expose the secret, right? Most importantly, the guy doesn't have any scent of Kuran so he's unlikely his minion.

We read all day until Veann interrupt us, informing that the Daems are ready to take their leave. The boy was reading some historical book at that time. He seem reluctant to go but he stood up and hand the book back to Veann. I too, hand the book to Veann for safekeeping and escorted him to the front. There, Father and Mr Daem awaits. They looked pleased to see both of us and after exchanging some goodbyes, the Daems left.

Once they left, Father asked if I get along with the boy. I replied in general, I find him okay. Father seems pleased enough with the remark and then left to his study.
